Natural Capital Declaration to be launched at Rio+20

12 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro: Amid talk by global policy-makers on including mandatory sustainability reporting by corporations as a Rio+20 outcome, finance CEOs from across the globe are also preparing to voice their own commitment to sustainability with a far-reaching statement on accounting for natural capital.

The Natural Capital Declaration, to be officially launched at Rio+20, will mark the first time the world of finance explicitly makes the protection and preservation of natural ecosystems a priority for CEO-level consideration and action.

The Declaration will feature at three key events (see below) at Rio+20, all of which will include press briefings and/or opportunities to interview NCD spokespeople.

The first event, the Natural Capital Declaration launch, will bring together heads of financial institutions who have signed the statement, as well as representatives from the Declaration’s conveners the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, the Global Canopy Programme, and the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

Speakers include:

  • Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations
  • Carlos Frederico Aires Duque, CEO, Infraprev
  • Rodrigo Sánchez Mújica, CEO, FIRA Banco de Mexico
  • Barbara Krumsiek, UNEP FI Co-Chair and CEO, Calvert Investments
  • William Bulmer, Director, Environmental, Social and Governance Department, International Finance Corporation
  • Richard Burrett, UNEP FI Co-Chair and Partner, Earth Capital Partners
  • Andrew Mitchell, Executive Director, Global Canopy Programme

Journalists wishing to attend the launch of the Natural Capital Declaration must request access to the Corporate Sustainability Forum by sending an email indicating name, role and media organisation to the Global Compact Office at media@unglobalcompact.org.
